Croatian Passport Application
Croatian Passport & Citizenship Application
So, you are interested in obtaining a Croatian Passport through descent? The first step that you will need to complete if you haven’t already done so is obtain your Croatian citizenship. Whether or not you are eligible to obtain Croatian citizenship will depend on a number of factors.
You will need to contact your closest Croatian consulate or embassy in Australia. You will need to speak to a representative who will be able to explain the process for your individual case. You will need to be able to prove that you are eligible for Croatian citizenship through descent by showing documentary evidence that supports your application. This evidence can be in the form of birth certificates, marriage certificates, expired passports, high school records, baptismal records etc, of the ancestor you are applying for Croatian citizenship through.
Any documents (Eg. Australian birth certificate) that are in English will need to be translated into Croatian by a NAATI accredited translator and stamped and signed by the professional Australian translator (This is subject to advice by the consulate). Some of your original documents will also need to have an Apostille placed on them. An Apostille is a stamp from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that authenticates the original document as a genuine Government issued document. An Apostille is recognised by all signatories to the Hague convention – Australia and Croatia are both signatories.
Your original document, along with the Apostille will need to be translated into Croatian, subject to advice from the consulate. EthnoLink Language services is able to provide the translation service for these documents into Croatian. All you will need to do is arrange for the documents that require Apostille’s, to have them placed on the documents from DFAT. You can obtain a free quote for the translation of your documents here.
Once your documents are translated, you can submit your application to the Croatian consulate. From here, it is a waiting game as the processing time for the application of your citizenship can take months, and in some cases, years! Once your citizenship is approved, you will then be able to apply for a Croatian passport.
