Suburban Rail Loop

The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is one of Victoria's largest infrastructure projects. Ethnolink is proud to have been engaged by SRL to create premium-quality translations of their Environmental Effects Statement Summary Report.

This report provides accessible, non-technical information about this exciting development to Victoria's multicultural communities in Greek and Chinese (Traditional & Simplified).

The client

The Suburban Rail Loop is one of several massive Victorian infrastructure developments being undertaken by the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority. The SRL project is publicised as the 'biggest infrastructure investment in Victoria history', and predicts enormous benefits once completed.

The SRL project is estimated to improve travel efficiency for more than 80% of Melburnians, in addition to creating more jobs, housing and public spaces. It's a highly demanded project in many Victorian suburbs that will help create a more connected and liveable city for our communities.

The challenge

Ethnolink was engaged to translate SRL's report into Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional) and Greek. The client requested a high-priority translation, which included independent checking by a second NAATI-certified translator and typesetting services.

The main challenge that our team faced was in delivering a quality product that met our rigorous standards within the client's timeline.

The solution

Our Ethnolink values include a can-do attitude and real relationships. As such, our team reached out to our client to discuss potential solutions, striving for open and honest communication.

We were able to obtain the first half of the report in advance, giving ourselves a head-start on our translation and typesetting processes. By using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, we were also able to flexibly accommodate any updates that the client made to the document as the project proceeded, and met the client's timeframes.

The results

Our team successfully worked with the client to manage a tight deadline, while negotiating the unique nuances of the project. Through establishing open, honest communication, we were able to come to a creative solution that allowed us room to work more flexibly, while delivering a premium-quality translation to our client.
