SAMESH

SAMESH CONNECT is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at increasing availability of HIV testing in priority populations. In addition to information and raising awareness, SAMESH Connect provides free HIV self-test kits in key locations.

SAMESH was in search of a multicultural communications provider that offers culturally-appropriate translations to effectively engage young, multicultural Australians — that's where Ethnolink came in!

The client

Based in South Australia, the South Australia Mobilisation + Empowerment for Sexual Health (SAMESH) was created in 2015.

Their innovative approach provides community-based support for the education, training and advocacy of sexual health and HIV.

The challenge

SAMESH Connect is an innovative project that is aimed at increasing the availability of HIV testing in priority populations.

SAMESH engaged Ethnolink to provide culturally-appropriate translations that approached the topic of sexuality, gender and sexual health in a way that is respectful across the 7 languages that the resources were being translated into. This was especially challenging as in many languages, vocabulary surrounding such typically taboo topics can be quite niche — and, in some cases, non-existent.

However, our team was determined to deliver translations that could help SAMESH's project achieve greater reach and awareness, to make a greater impact among South Australia's multicultural LGBTI communities.

The solution

We tailored a solution for SAMESH that involved our community checking service — our most reliable approach to ensure quality in translations for the public.

With our community checking service, we engaged community members in each of the target languages to review the translated website in-context via a tailored series of questions, in-language.

By undertaking community checking, we were able to prevent any culturally inappropriate translations that might be considered disrespectful to the target audience.

The results

SAMESH Connect has since launched with a fully multilingual hub that makes information about the project and free HIV self-test kits — available in 7 languages!
