Parks Victoria partnered with Ethnolink to make camping safety information more accessible and culturally relevant for multicultural communities. By consulting directly with community members, Ethnolink crafted clear safety messages in Simple English, supported by culturally appropriate illustrations. These messages were then translated into six languages, independently checked, and reviewed by the community to ensure accuracy and resonance. The result was a multilingual, easy-to-understand fold-out brochure designed to keep all visitors safe and informed.
The primary challenge was to create and disseminate camping safety messages that were not only accurate but also culturally relevant and understandable to non-English speaking visitors. This required a nuanced approach to translation and community engagement across multiple languages.
To overcome the challenge, Ethnolink developed clear and relevant camping safety messages in Simple English with input from community consultations. We engaged community members to review and provide feedback on accompanying illustrations. The key messaging was then professionally translated into six languages by NAATI certified translators, followed by independent checks for accuracy. Community members further reviewed the translations to ensure cultural appropriateness. The final materials were typeset into a multilingual fold-out brochure and underwent a complimentary in-context review to confirm correct display and accessibility for the target audience.
