Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) partnered with Ethnolink to conduct a comprehensive study on the challenges faced by multicultural communities regarding road projects in Victoria. The study aimed to understand how road projects impact multicultural communities and identify effective communication and engagement strategies. Through audience identification and eight Community Roundtable Discussions held across six regions heavily impacted by MRPV projects, insights were gathered to inform recommendations for improving communication with multicultural audiences.
Understanding how road projects impact multicultural communities posed a significant challenge. Cultural and linguistic barriers, coupled with unfamiliarity with Australian transport systems, could exacerbate stress and isolation for multicultural community members. Navigating road works and understanding signage proved particularly daunting for newly arrived migrants, highlighting the need for tailored communication strategies.
Ethnolink undertook audience identification across six regions heavily impacted by MRPV projects and facilitated eight Community Roundtable Discussions. These discussions, informed by thorough desktop research, aimed to understand multicultural community members’ experiences and preferences regarding road projects. Insights from these discussions informed recommendations to improve communication and engagement strategies with multicultural audiences.
