Rohingya is a language spoken by the Rohingya people of Arakan andd Myanmar.
As the Rohingya community is largely Muslim, the Rohingya language has been influenced by Arabic and Urdu.
Rohingya was first written using a variation of the Arabic alphabet during the 19th century.
In 1975 a new orthography based on the Arabic alphabet was developed, as well as another based on the Urdu alphabet.
In the 1980s a new script for Rohingya, known as Hanifi, was created which is based on the Arabic script. There is also now a method of writing Rohingya using the Latin alphabet.
