Farsi translation FAQ

Farsi is a dialect of Persian, however the two terms after often used interchangeably. Farsi is spoken by a large number of people in Iran, Afghanistan and surrounding countries.

It is believed that Farsi is spoken by around 110 million people, mainly in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan where it is an official language.

It is hard to know how many people speak each dialect of Persian, as there are a large number of dialects and many of the speakers of these dialects are dispersed around the world.

Variants of Persian including Dari, Farsi and Hazaragi are spoken by 111,012 Australians, according to 2016 Census date. This number is rapidly growing due to migration to Australia, with the number of speakers more than doubling in Australia between 2011 and 2016.
