Ethnolink collaborated with Infrastructure NSW and the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) to develop a comprehensive multimedia communication strategy aimed at enhancing community preparedness and response during floods. This project involved creating and translating various content forms into multiple languages to ensure accessibility for target communities.

The challenge

NSW SES faced the challenge of effectively communicating critical emergency information to the linguistically and culturally diverse population within the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley. The primary objective was to develop and execute a research-driven multicultural communications strategy to ensure important messages were reaching their intended audience in a clear and culturally appropriate way, in their preferred language.

The solution

Ethnolink provided a comprehensive solution for the NSW SES, starting with the development of a robust community-informed strategy tailored to the unique needs of the pre-identified target audience to ensure cultural relevance. In collaboration with Punchy Digital Media, Ethnolink scripted and filmed two live-action videos, “What’s Your Plan” and “Know Your Risk,” in 12 languages, managed pre-production tasks, and created and revised scripts. They executed filming with a producer overseeing project management and engaged production assistants for technical support. Ethnolink also recruited native-speaking video talent for each of the 12 languages, translated the scripts, and designed supporting multimedia content including social media tiles, posters, radio ads, digital banners, fact sheets, infographics, and audio fact sheets in all languages. All assets were then community-checked by target audience members to ensure clarity and suitability of messaging.

The results

The collaborative effort between Ethnolink and NSW SES resulted in the creation of an extensive suite of multilingual and multimedia resources. These materials have significantly improved NSW SES's ability to communicate with and educate diverse communities in the Hawkesbury-Nepean region. The project not only enhanced flood preparedness and response but also reinforced the importance of accessible communication in ensuring public safety.
