Emily was born and raised in Malaysia, and moved to Australia when she was thirteen. Throughout her schooling in Malaysia, Emily learned Mandarin, Malay and English to varying levels. Though she grew up among Chinese speakers and attended Chinese school, she always found herself more comfortable with English. Because of her childhood experiences, Emily developed an interest in cultures and languages. In university, she took on International Relations and Japanese Studies. She spent a year abroad in Japan, where she came to realise the cultural nuances of communication styles. A class in Emily’s final semester inspired her to explore translation as a profession and a hobby. After graduating, she joined Ethnolink as Marketing & Communications Officer. She spends her workdays learning from people who are just as passionate about languages, translation and multicultural communication as she is.
